We received our building permit yesterday! I'm sure that won't be the only grueling ordeal we will go through with the building department as we still have many, many inspections to undergo during the process but we finally have a permit.
While my husband and I were sitting in the lobby of the building which contains the building department which is located in a group of county buildings at a really central location my husband looks at me and says, "Here we are sitting right in front of the Building Departments reception desk and you just have to wonder why when someone walks across the floor you can feel the entire building move". I replied, "oh, you noticed that did you?". Then I proceeded to tell him it was even worse when you were on the second floor. Now this building is not an old building and it also contains the civil court, the traffic court and at least one criminal court room as well as many other county offices. But as you walk in the main entrance and "feel the earth move under your feet" you find yourself standing right in front of a reception desk with a large sign above proudly identifying it as the building department. One just has to wonder who did the inspections there. HA! Dare I mention that Code Enforcement is co-located in the same area of the building?
So we have a building permit. *sigh* It just seems so anti climatic. I mean it's not like we woke up this morning and anything was really different, no equipment waiting at the gate, no work crews ready to work. Just us, looking at each other with some weird sense of exhausted satisfaction saying "Yep, we got a building permit". It's kind of like trying and trying to get pregnant and then one day the doctor tells you, "you're pregnant". You are happy but there is so much more ahead, so much more that you have to do and go through to get that final reward. And then you begin to panic a bit wondering if you're really up for the task at hand. Time will tell. Time will tell. And so will this blog.
